Think about shopping for a mortage like you would shop for a car -- you want to find the best product at the best price, and with the best terms for payment. Plan to devote some time and thought to this process (you didn't buy the FIRST car you looked at, right?). At a minumum, check with three different mortgage loan providers.

It's always best to start with local banks, credit unions, and mortgage brokers. However, one neat national mortgage comparison website that we have found is mortgagemarvel.com.

If you discover that your credit score is low (below 620) you should spend three to four months improving it. A higher credit score means a better deal on your home loan. And that better deal could save you many thousands of dollars over the length of the mortgage.
